Sam Y There is an important difference between pleasure and relief. circa 2018

There is an important difference between pleasure and relief. Smokers feel better after they smoke. But this is not because they get pleasure from smoking-- it is because they are less uncomfortable. The desire to smoke is the beginning of withdrawal from the last cigarette. The best smoking can do is take smokers back to the way they would feel if they did not smoke.

But, in fact, most smokers do not even get back to this neutral point, they live with physical discomfort, self-reproach, and an obsession to stop smoking. They feel better after a cigarette, but only because they are superficially less uncomfortable. Smoking is not pleasure-- it is just less discomfort in the short run and more discomfort in the long run.
